"Give us money or we'll call you an Islamophobe"

Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade, responded yesterday to attempts by the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) to discredit a panel on State Department outreach to Islamic groups that appear moderate but which seem likely to be anything but (including MPAC itself). He declared:

"This hearing will go on. We need to make sure that the State Department is not giving U.S. tax dollars to those on the other side in the war on terrorism." He added "The Muslim Public Affairs Council should apologize for the statements of its executive director on September 11, 2001."


MPAC, ISNA and a constellation of other radical groups and individuals have been supported by the State Department. Perhaps Thursday's testimony will signal a turning point, seeing the State Department implement stricter guidelines to avoid past mistakes and embarrassments, which have damaged America's national security.

It is encouraging to see someone in Sherman's position take the issue on so fearlessly and directly.

"I think one of the greatest fears of people in the United States is somebody may call you a racist...they may call you an Islamophobe," he said in the hearing. "And what we've seen with some of these organizations is their message is clear: ‘Give us money or we'll call you an Islamophobe'...that's what they say to the State Department. What they say to us in Congress is ‘Don't question the fact that we're getting money or we'll call you an Islamophobe.'"

Self proclaimed terrorist expert Steven Emerson is scheduled to testify this Thursday, July 31st, in a congressional hearing entitled "Foreign Aid and the Fight Against Terrorism and Proliferation: Leveraging Foreign Aid to Achieve U.S. Policy Goals." Emerson has a formidable history of attacking Islam and Muslims in America under the guise of his alleged expertise. Those familiar with Emerson's legacy state his lack of credentials in foreign aid and foreign policy and are concerned that his testimony will feed Islamaphobia.

The Islamic Society of North America encourages it members and all Americans to contact Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA), chairman of the "House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade", convener of the panel, and request that balanced, qualified testimony be included in the panel or the session be canceled. ISNA is concerned that Emerson's hate mongering will deter responsible policy making, impede effective security, and detrimentally affect American Muslims.

MPAC Demands Congressman Sherman Ensure Credible Testimony or Postpone Hearing

Today, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) released a letter urging Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA) to either provide credible experts at an upcoming hearing on foreign aid, or postpone the hearing until credible experts can be found.

Congressman Brad Sherman, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade, will call on self-proclaimed "terrorism expert" Steven Emerson to testify at the congressional hearing. Emerson, who has a proven track record of anti-Muslim bigotry, is not a credible expert on foreign aid or foreign policy.

MPAC’s letter calls for the Congressman to "ensure that those who are relied upon for knowledge have the requisite expertise, experience, and nuanced outlook. In the interest of maintaining a good balance of views, we urge you to include an additional panelist from an NGO, university, or think-tank that can represent the positive role of civil society organizations in challenging terrorism. If, however, you cannot find any other witnesses that can balance the current witness panel, we request that you cancel or postpone panel until such time as the committee is able to convene an unbiased slate of witnesses."

PETITION Calling for Congressional Hearings to Review Radical Islamist Materials Distributed in American Mosques

Today ACT! for America has launched it's Patriot Campaign - This year we will push for Congress to review hate materials being distributed in mosques throughout the country.

In a Freedom House undercover operation it has been found that at least 75% of mosques are denouncing democracy and calling for the overthrow of the constitutional law and calling for holy war.

Reports are that this type of speech has gotten worse in the last year: "we are commanded to go to war.", "We Muslims will not stop until we invade the heartland." A whole new generation is being raised up against Christians and Jews in this country, just as they are throughout the world. It is also reported that what is being said in English is far different than what is being said in Arabic.


In a recent poll of America Muslims under 30 years old 26% said suicide bombing is justified in the name of Jihad.

73% of those polled by ACT for America want Congressional Hearings and want our lawmakers to uphold our national security and our anti-terrorists statues enforced!

National Petition Campaign Launched - Please Sign the Petition

The petition we launched is entitled "Petition Calling for Congressional Hearings to Review Radical Islamist Materials Distributed in American Mosques." The petition, which you can read in its entirety at www.actforamerica.org, begins with these words:

We the American people call on our U.S. Congress to conduct hearings for the purpose of examining extremist materials that have been found in American mosques that: exhort Muslims to engage in holy war (jihad) against us; incite terror and violence against us; call for abolishing our constitutional form of government and replacing it with the theological totalitarianism of strict Islamic law, known as "Sharia."

The petition includes some examples of such materials, and then closes with these words: Since there is sufficient evidence to indicate that the information in some materials sold or distributed in mosques in America rises to the level of a genuine threat to our nation's security and liberty; Since it is the first responsibility of our federal government to safeguard the national security of our country and its citizens and guests; And because the oath of office of a Member of Congress is an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution;

We, the undersigned, call upon Congress to conduct hearings to examine materials that have been uncovered that have been sold or distributed in mosques in the United States, to determine if these materials violate federal statutes governing tax-exempt organizations; to determine if these materials violate federal anti-terrorism statutes; and to determine if these materials violate federal statutes prohibiting sedition, the advocacy and/or effort of abolishing or overthrowing our constitutional form of government.
